The Grumpy Pete is a 2003 model Peterbilt 379 EXHD (extended hood) with a surprising 690,000 miles under the hood; surprising because TGP looks almost new. He is powered by a C-15 Caterpillar engine which produces a whopping 550 HP and has 13 forward gears hooked up to 3:11 diffs, all of which sit on a 260 inch wheelbase. Inside the cab, there are all of the things you could need for life on the road – double bunk, refrigerator, TV, popcorn and coffee maker, rear-view camera and plenty of storage.
Outside TGP has had some cosmetic surgery of the LargeCar kind – new 8” chrome exhaust stacks with “spool mufflers” on the inside, a new 14’ drop-down visor, old-school single headlights, new LED indicators, new Peterbilt mud flaps and tons of chrome additions to gauges and switches on the dash.
To make the ride smooth, TGP floats on an airbag suspension, airbags under the cab and air-ride seats for both passenger and driver. He also has self-balancing front steering wheels which use centrifugal force to position ball bearings encased in a mercury-filled steel ring on the inside of the wheel.
